It’s been a pretty cool and eclectic year for the music I like so I decided to rank my personal favourite full-length releases of 2012 (specifying full-length because there were some incredible EPs dropped this year so go listen to the stuff Mykki Blanco and Solange put out when you’re done reading this)

Also please note that this is my personal opinion which is highly subjective as well as poorly informed so please refrain from asking any permutation of “hey, where’s [your favourite record]” because that’s fricking exhausting

Alright, without any further preamble, here they are:

The Parallax II: Future Sequence - Between The Buried And Me: This honestly should come as no surprise to anyone who has been reading my blog since the day this record dropped. It’s incredible and engrossing and adventurous and is now one of my favourite concept records of all time, if not my absolute favourite.

America - Dan Deacon: The sense of pathos on this album is wonderful and makes me feel good things on even my lowest of days. Everything is so precisely constructed but it’s not without the sense of playfulness Dan Deacon has made a name for himself by having.

All We Love We Leave Behind - Converge: I’m starting to realize how difficult it is to talk about these records without using exhausting music journalism cliches, so drink every time you see one. On that note, this record is positively crushing. It’s actually pretty frustrating how much better Converge does their schtick better than any of their peers but it at the very least makes for really good music.

Kiss - Carly Rae Jepsen: I catch a lot of flack for this one, but the fact of the matter is I can’t find a single track I don’t absolutely adore on this record and that’s exactly what a masterfully produced bubblegum pop album should do.

Intrinsic - The Contortionist: This record kind of had to wash over me before I really grew to love everything about it, but once I really started “getting it” I couldn’t really find anything not to appreciate. These guys aren’t that much older than me but they’re already trekking into musical territory I can only hope to one day explore maturely.

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do - Fiona Apple: Great tracks, great sound, ridiculous and excellent album name, everything is great and good here.

Keys To The Cuff - JJDOOM: It’s hard to talk about my appreciation for anything MF Doom does without sounding like a total asshole (like the stupid bingbong who runs this piece of shit) so I’m not going to say much more about this record other than I liked it a lot, but you don’t have to.

Koloss - Meshuggah: Sometimes I sit by myself chugging beers and shouting about how great this band is and this record did nothing to inhibit my enjoyment of that particular activity.

Safe Travels - Jukebox The Ghost: There’s so much fun to be had listening to this record, and there’s a lot of personal introspection to take away from it too. I don’t really reflect on who I am as a person as to much as I do each and every time I listen to Adulthood. It’s cool that music can do that.

The Royal Thousand - Glass Cloud: Josh Travis’ guitar work both amazes and scares the shit out of me, and I think it’s really great that he’s found a band dynamic that both contains him and lets him colour outside of the lines. Techy shit is even cooler when it’s harnessed and used to tell a bigger musical story.

12. The Ruler
